4: Stuck Relying on the Unreliable (Living Among the Dead Part 1) Abide and Abound: Battle Burnout & False Beliefs with Biblical Truth, Christian Mindset & Self-Care

Do you feel stuck & stagnant? When Christians feel a lack of growth or shame and fear, we are often relying on the unreliable instead of on God in our day-to-day needs. Whether we are looking for love, freedom, hope, joy, provision, or satisfaction… Jesus is the only living and lasting source! In this series, we'll see the sneaky false beliefs that we can find any of this lasting goodness anywhere but Christ. Over and over again in the Gospels, Jesus identifies our earthly perspective and transforms it into a heavenly one. In the same way, we will see how we are looking in all the wrong places, sometimes twisting good things and blessings into our top priority and the things we rely on. We'll take a look at Luke 24:1-9, Jeremiah 2:12-13, John 4:13, & Isaiah 45:18-21 ESV and the idols that show up in our own lives as we turn away from the Living Water of Christ to our own cisterns that are full of nothing-ness or nastiness. Life and our spiritual destination is assured for us through faith in Jesus, but day-to-day we can turn our blessings into our safe place… but good things without God are always unreliable. Relying on these unreliable things always results in shame, fear, hurt, and staying stuck as the enemy tries to discourage us, distract us, and cause us to doubt our truly faithful and loving God. Nelson’s Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, 3rd Edition

I would HIGHLY recommend. I love this book for several reasons:

  1. The maps are easy to understand and help me visualize what’s going on
  2. I believe the dates and statements to be as close to factual as possible
  3. The charts and information are so helpful to understand and summarize each book of the Bible
Popular Survey of the New Testament, By Norman L. Geisler

Another book I really enjoy. This not only sets up the New Testament with helpful information, but it also takes each book and breaks it down. It gives book information (like author, date, audience, etc) and even includes a brief commentary on important or challenging verses. Another resource I would highly recommend.

ESV Study Bible (Walnut, Celtic Imprint) ESV Study Bible (Hardcover)

I use this ESV study Bible almost every day and definitely every week. It has great maps, book introductions, and information about context, specific verses, and even historical facts. I have the fake leather version which is sturdy and beautiful. I would highly recommend! ESV is my personal favorite translation. When I got my physical Bible, I also got a virtual version on esvbible.org which I also use regularly.

NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible

I really enjoy this NIV Study Bible & I use it regularly. It has great maps, charts, & historical/archeological information throughout. Plus really nice color pictures of historical cities & objects! It does a pretty good job going verse by verse to share historical & Scriptural connections.
